According to Delish, which sourced their findings from the latest Census Bureau estimates, “On average, American households are paying about $270.21 per week ($1,080 a month) for groceries.”
And "Households with children tend to spend over $331 per week on average.”
And remember these amounts are after-tax dollars!
Simply put, to save $270 or $331 this week, Don’t go to the supermarket or the grocery store!
Don’t buy more groceries this week!
OK, you may be thinking, “Arthur, that’s Crazy. How can I decide not to buy groceries? My family and I will starve.”
Okay, I get it. But. . .
If you’re anything like me, you have at least some food and staples in the refrigerator, freezer and pantry. And perhaps some canned goods too.
Probably three meals, five meals or more. Three square meals at least!
And maybe some leftovers from takeout food or a night on the town too.
I do.
When you use the food that’s ‘lying around’ the house, you save money because you’re Not spending money on buying groceries this week.
The money you spent on the groceries in your house is called a ‘Sunk Cost’.
According to Investopedia.com, Sunk Cost means “An expense that refers to the loss of time, money, or effort, which you can't get back.”
In other words, you already spent your money buying the food and buying the groceries in the first place. You can’t go back to the supermarket or grocery store and get your money bank. The money is gone – sunk.
A Sunk Cost.
There’s NO additional cost involved in cooking the food you have in your kitchen, pantry, freezer or refrigerator.
Take a look around your kitchen and cook up a storm. If you have to supplement the food with a few items, for example fresh vegetables or fresh produce, you’ll still save money.
Maybe even involve your children in the cooking. Tell them that you’re trying to save money this week so our family is going to use up some of the food we have in the pantry, etc.
After I got divorced, as I’ve mentioned in various Budget and Grow Rich® blog posts, money was very tight. I told my children we were going to eat leftovers. They were fine!
As I recall, I grabbed the opportunity for my three children and me to cook together, have some fun and enjoy a home-cooked meal. Quality family time! And we saved money too.
