If you’re like me, you like to eat at restaurants. So why not save money every morsel of the way!

In my quest to help you save money permanently, here’s the way. . .

Check out these credit cards which give you cash back on your purchases at restaurants located in the United States.

Some credit cards give you the option to select a particular (one) spending category, for example restaurants (or travel, gasoline, etc.). Once you select ‘restaurants’ as your category, there you go.

With the Citi Custom Cash℠ credit card, you earn the 5% back on you’re the spending category where you spend the most money. You can track your monthly spending, which is a bit of a hassle. Or, you can use that card for restaurant spending only; or use the card at restaurants and make a few smaller purchases or add an automatic payment for a service that where the amount is lower than your monthly restaurant spending.

Before you apply for the card, be sure to read the fine print to make sure that the card works for you and you can maximize your benefits based on your spending habits. And note that credit card companies change the card’s benefits over time.

For example, the Citi Custom Cash℠ Card benefits include purchases at cafes, bars, lounges and fast food restaurants. Benefits do not include purchases at bakeries, caterers, restaurants located inside another business (such as hotels, stores, stadiums, grocery stores, or warehouse clubs) and third party dining delivery services.

What’s more, some of the cards featured above offer benefits on additional purchases too. So, depending on your buying habits you may want to compare these cards to maximize your overall benefits.

When You Want to Save the Money, Be Sure to Use the Particular Credit Card that gives you the benefit you want.

To obtain these cards, in general, your FICO credit rating has to be at least 670, which is ‘good to excellent’.

As always, if you have outstanding credit card debt, it’s usually best to cut your spending and direct your extra cash to pay off your high-cost credit card debt. That’s really the ticket to financial health and freedom.

Another way to save on restaurants is to Pay with Cash. Leave the credit cards at home or in your wallet.

Many restaurants and other retail establishments have begun adding a 2% to 4% surcharge to purchases made with credit cards.

Credit card companies charge approximately 2% to 4% in fees; so for every $100 a customer charges on their credit card, the merchant collects only $96 to $98.

Be sure to compare the cash back the credit card company offers vs. the surcharge the restaurant adds to your bill.

Bon appétit!
