Check Out Free Community Events.
Last summer, I visited my brother and sister in-law. Their town sponsored Free concerts in the park. During the summer, my town holds several movie nights in the park on the big screen.
Cook Dinner together.
Grab a tasty recipe online or from your favorite cookbook and fire up the stove. Barbecuing can be fun too.
Catch a Matinee Movie.
Every so often, although far less frequently with the growing popularity of streaming, I used to catch an 11:00 am or 1:00 pm movie. Although, every so often I snoozed for five or ten minutes. Either way, you’ll benefit from reduced ticket prices. Although the cost of the popcorn will set you back.
Catch a FREE Movie at Your Public Library or Community Center.
In my former town, a college film professor led a movie night and discussion at the public library. Free.
Host a Movie Night at Home.
A few years ago, my son Mike V and a few of his friends came over. One night we watched our favorite ‘Accepted’ with Justin Long and Jonah Hill. Another time, we watched ‘The Fast and Furious’ the original. At the time, we imbibed DVDs but today. . .well, streaming rules. Any way you screen it, we had a lot of fun and saved money too.
Take a Free Class at Your Public Library.
My public library holds all sorts of cool events including yoga, movies, lectures and book clubs. Most of the programs are Free.
Take a Class at Your Local Community College.
Many courses are Free or low cost. You’ll have fun, learn something new and find more things to talk about.
Catch a High School Show or College Show.
The ticket prices tend to be a lot less than a Broadway Show and good quality. When my daughter Alice was a high school senior, she played Alice in Alice in Wonderland. I purchased all the tickets I could find for friends and family members.
Take in a Farmers Market, Flea Market, Garage Sale or Estate Sale.
That’s four inexpensive date ideas for the price of one. At our local commuter rail station, every Saturday there’s a Farmers Market. A few towns away, there’s a Flea Market almost every Saturday. And now and again, you can find a good Garage Sale and an Estate Sale.
Stroll the Museums for FREE.
Many museums offer free admission on certain days of the week or the month. My public library gives away free tickets to museums. Nice.
Play Board Games.
My ex-girlfriend and I used to play backgammon for example. And by the way, she kicked my butt every time. I’m a big fan of Boggle® and Othello®.
Play Cards.
We used to play poker too. . .
Organize a ‘Pantry Luck’ Dinner.
Where you grab this and that from your pantry and see what repast you can conjure up. You might be surprised by how tasty this can be and regardless, you’ll save a ton compared to dining at a restaurant. Many people call this a ‘Potluck Supper’ where everyone brings a dish. When my children were young, six or eight neighbors – families got together one Friday night every month for a potluck supper. Each family brought a dish and we rotated houses. Typically, the host family prepared the main course. The children enjoyed pizza and watched a movie on the TV in the basement.
Community Service.
Check out your local area newspapers and town websites. You can find many a community service activity and volunteer.
Make Arts & Crafts.
When my daughter Alice turned 6, my now ex-wife and I organized her birthday party – A Fashion Show Party. We based the bash on Mary Kate & Ashley’s Fashion Show video. Everyone showed up in costume. A dozen mothers including my Mom combed a lot of hair; applied lipstick and painted a bunch of nails. Then we had a fashion show and took photos. So fun. And if all else fails. . .
Watch the Submarine Races
as my Mom used to say. Have fun!
