The practice of monitoring your bank account – your money – or daresay reconciling your checkbook may seem archaic or anathema, but read on. And today, we won’t even dip our toe into the world of personal budgeting; we’ll leave that for another rainy day.

In 2007, I got divorced. I was short on money – very – and ugh I even bounced a check or two. Bad scene. Thankfully those days are long in the history books – knock on wood.

Somewhere around 2010, a thief or two opened four charge cards in my name – Sears, J.C. Penney, Toys R Us and yes Victoria’s Secret.

That was when I decided to check my checking account balance and activity every day – well five days a week anyway. While this may be excessive, I gained total control over my funds and took comfort knowing that I knew exactly how much money I had on hand and how much money I could spend.

The next step was to reconcile my checking account. Now, I’m Not saying you have to reconcile five days a week – Tuesday through Saturday. Those are the days after each business day.

But, this practice will help you identify any errors and take note of when your funds are running low.

Taking this exercise one step further, consider reconciling your checkbook.

This means analyzing the gap – the difference – between your book balance or checkbook balance and the balance per your bank’s records.

When you write checks or initiated online payments that haven’t cleared the bank’s books yet, your book balance will be lower than the balance your bank reports.

BUT, you should spend less than your checkbook balance.

That assumes that you enter your transactions in some sort of checkbook or check register.

This handy Excel spreadsheet with instructions will show you the way.

I use this program and have gained control over my money; know how much I can spend; and sleep well at night.
